The Legion of Mary

By P.J. Furey

Oh the Legion of Mary Is progressing with pride,

With large numbers enlisting The whole worldwide.

It was started in Dublin, in nineteen-twenty one,

By the saintly Frank Duff, and God’s Blessing it won.

It grew and it prospered, through Frank’s mighty work,

And he duly recruited a young lady from Cork.

Edel Quinn was her name and ‘twas her great joy,

When she was appointed Her Legion’s Envoy.

In nineteen thirty six, out to Africa she went.

To extend her fond Legion she fully was bent.

Thro’ commitment and toil, success came her way,

O’er one hundred praesidia she set up in her day.

But sad to relate poor Edel fell ill,

She died doing her work,"twas God’s Holy Will,

And now in Nairobi, in the grave she takes rest

Contented her work, for the Legion is blest.

So now let us pray, with great fervour and love,

That Edel will soon be crowned a saint up above.
